What’s Your ‘One More’? (It Might Be the Game-Changer You Need)

What’s your ‘one more’? (It might be the game-changer you need)
Shannon’s August Update
A few days ago, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote followed by a hands-on workshop with a dynamic group of industry professionals, and wow, the energy was incredible! The room was buzzing with creativity, people sharing ideas, and diving deeper into how my core concepts could work for them in their companies.
Then came the game-changer: our “one more.” The idea is simple but powerful — what’s one small extra thing you can do daily that creates a massive ripple effect over time to go above and beyond your competition?
One more follow-up call to a client.
One more minute of prep before your big meeting.
One more genuine thank-you to a teammate or mentor.
One more quick review of a proposal to sharpen it.
One more networking reach-out to grow your circle.
As we shared, someone stood up and said, “I think I’m actually pretty good at this for my customers, vendors, and teams. Maybe too good, because what I’m really bad at is setting boundaries. What’s ‘one more’ way I can reinforce mine?”
Boom. The floodgates opened.
Suddenly, the whole room was nodding, admitting how hard it is to protect our boundaries — especially in today’s “always-on” world. It was a real, human moment of connection and rawness that reminded me we’re all struggling forward in our own way, trying to get it right.
So here are my Top 5 Boundary-Setting Tricks that help me live with purpose while avoiding burnout:
Block out time for exercise. Health is non-negotiable. I protect 60 minutes a day — yoga, gym, or hiking — and treat it like any important meeting. Prioritizing movement keeps me sharp, focused, and ready to show up fully for the rest of the day.
Time block like a pro. I schedule certain windows of time for emails, checking to-do boxes, preparing presentations, etc., so tasks don’t bleed into each other. Giving everything its own “home” keeps me calm, organized, and way more productive.
Prioritize “Moving It Forward” time. These are sacred blocks reserved only for the creative, strategic work that drives my biggest goals. No errands or busywork allowed — just the deep focus, when my energy is the highest, that moves the needle.
Say “no” with purpose. I’m often asked to give my time or expertise for free or at a discount, but every yes to an “extra” is a no to what truly matters. If it doesn’t align with my bigger purpose and priorities, I graciously decline so I can give my best where it counts most.
Build buffer time. Back-to-back meetings drain energy. I leave 10–15 minutes between commitments to reset, reflect, and prepare so I can show up with clarity instead of burnout.
Because here’s the truth: maximizing our potential only matters if we can sustain it — without losing ourselves to exhaustion. When I was training for the Olympics, this came naturally to me. But in “real life” as a mom and business owner, I’m constantly re-learning and trying my best to live on purpose while staying grounded.
This month, I challenge you: What’s your “one more”? Not just for your customers or your team — but for you.
Fall is Here, Winter is Coming…
The leaves are starting to turn in the Utah mountains, which means ski season is around the corner! Keynote slots are filling fast, as are ski days at Deer Valley. If you’re planning a Sales Kickoff or Executive Retreat this winter, let’s connect.
Let’s make your next event extraordinary!
