Unleashing Your Inner Navigator: The Art of Trusting Your Intuition

Shannon’s September update.

I’ve been thinking a lot about intuition lately. That gut feeling you get when making an important decision. Do you listen to it and trust it or try to talk yourself out of that feeling? The more that I pay attention to my intuition, the more I realize how much I try to talk myself out of trusting it, and I don’t think that’s a good thing.

As an athlete I felt incredibly in tune with my intuition because it often coincided with danger and getting hurt. Knowing that I could push my body to the limit one day or take it easy and not ski as fast on the next day was based on my gut feeling and what my intuition was telling me. Should I end the training day early because I just felt in my body that I was going to blow out my knee? I trusted my mind and body—and the vast majority of the time, it didn’t let me down.

But now, as a woman, business owner, and parent I find myself relying less on my intuition and more on data, facts, and logic to make decisions. When a decision doesn’t seem quite right or my gut is telling me NO, I sometimes find that I am convincing myself otherwise based on outside information that makes it ok.

This summer I have been paying close attention. My findings are that trusting my intuition has been a powerful tool in helping me make choices that align with my authentic self and what my core values are. I have witnessed this pave the way to greater satisfaction and success in my life.

While intuition might seem mystical, it’s rooted in our subconscious mind, drawing upon our life experiences, emotions, and perceptions. Trusting your intuition doesn’t mean abandoning reason; it means finding a balance between logic and instinct.

So how can we all begin to notice when our intuition is trying to tell us something, and, most importantly, have the confidence to trust it when there is a lot at stake?

These are my steps to cultivate trust in your intuition:

  1. Practice Mindfulness

Regular mindfulness meditation can help you become more attuned to your inner voice, making it easier to recognize intuitive feelings.

2. Reflect on Past Intuitive Insights

Review instances in your life when your intuition led you in the right direction. This retrospective analysis can boost your confidence in your intuitive abilities.

3. Stay Open-Minded

Be receptive to intuitive nudges, even when they contradict conventional wisdom. Sometimes, the most groundbreaking ideas come from challenging the status quo.

4. Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

Not every intuitive decision will yield the desired outcome. However, failures can provide valuable lessons and refine your intuition over time.

Trusting your intuition is a reliable approach to decision-making. It's a valuable skill that can lead to more fulfilling personal relationships, improved self-awareness, better choices, and enhanced innovation. By cultivating trust in your intuition, you can lead a more authentic, balanced, and successful life. So, the next time your gut is telling you something, listen—your intuition might just be guiding you towards your best possible self.
