3 REASONS MY MOM IS A BADASS

Let’s honor the moms!

As we have just celebrated Mother's Day, I wanted to share a few thoughts on why my mom is such an influence in my life. I know that all of us have different and unique relationships with our moms. Some of us have lost our moms, some of us want to be moms, and that is all okay. I want to honor where you are in your mom journey.

I am one of the lucky ones that has always had a loving and supportive relationship with my mom. She’s been my biggest supporter since day 1, we’ve traveled the world together, and now she’s the best grandma I could have ever hoped for. As I reflect on all that my mom has given me, these are the top 3 things that make my mom a badass:

1. She always showed up. Both of my parents were always present in my life, but my mom went the extra mile. My dad worked a typical construction job and my mom was a lawyer (with a lot more flexibility), so she showed up to EVERYTHING. She was at every soccer game, every band concert, every school function, she volunteered for our mogul ski events, she drove us to the ski resort after school, she took us on field trips and drove to every activity we wanted to partake in. Without even realizing it, she was giving me the confidence and support to grow my roots and at the same time giving me the wings to fly!

2. She knows that there are never “too many” sparkles. My mom always dressed (and continues to dress) in the most colorful and sparkly outfits. Even though she worked in a male dominated profession, she always showed up bright and bold. I remember people saying, “Wow, that is a VERY sparkly outfit” in a kind of snarky manner and she would always reply, “Thank you, you can never have too many sparkles - you know.” This always stuck with me. It is so important to show up as your authentic self, and my mom is great at that. You can only be you, everyone else is taken!!

3. She lives the motto of “If you don’t like it, change it”. Like I said, my mom was a lawyer for most of my childhood, but she reached a breaking point when I was in high school and needed out. She knew the effect it would have on both her professional career as well as her paycheck, but her mental health and wellbeing was more important. She quit being a lawyer and got a job as the county clerk. A lot of people in our community questioned her decision, but she had the courage to do it anyway. A year or two into her new job, a position opened up as a judicial commissioner. Once again, she knew it would be life changing, but went for it anyways – and got it! As a child I didn’t quite understand how heavy these decisions can be to make but I am so thankful she gave herself the permission to make them. Because of her I’ve given myself the permission to make changes in my own life that were scary and felt like they carried the weight of the world.

Cheers to all of you fabulous Moms out there.  Thank you for all you do and if no one has told you lately - you are doing a fantastic job!!
